First blog post, Happy 2nd Bday to the first non-human member of the Jellen Johnson family, Sookie Johnson, the Olde English Bulldogge, straight out of the streets of Mesquite, TX, keeping it Brindle Coat Real. Actually, we got her from a loving Olde English Bulldogge breeder, that had an actual house, in a lovely Mesquite, TX neighborhood (as lovely as you can imagine that).
We went to get a regular English Bulldog, slothy type, can't move much, not agile at all, trudges around all day, and great snorer + furry pillow...but little did we know when we arrived at what we thought was the chainsaw massacre neighborhood (yes a little over exaggerated), we walked into a house of one giant loving olde english bulldogge mommy (80 lbs mind you) that greatest us with a smile at the door, a litter of adorable english bulldog pups (6 of them), and two olde english bulldogge brindle puppies with amazing personalities that were irresistible. The beautiful brindle coat was too much to resist especially when she jumped up on El with white paws and gave her a big sloppy kiss, end of story, that was the ballgame. Sold. Their big eyes locked and there was no breaking up that bond.
Come to find out Olde English Bulldogge's have a longer life expectancy, more athletic, larger snout, breathe better, and this dog lived up to every one of those traits to this day. Her mom was an 80 lbs. purebred Olde English and her big Papi was a regular english bulldog 80 lbs (both very proud parents). They are bred from American bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs, and the latter, trained to drag down massive bulls in Spanish games (reminiscent of my childhood).
She's turned out to be a conniving son of a gal, very intelligent, and will play you like a fiddle, John Denver style (and Lord knows you don't want someone to play you John Denver style...). If you walked by her standing on the corner in the old market (is that rude?), sign on her neck would say "will learn any trick or do anything for food" which has been sit, lay down, shake, wait for your parents to go downstairs first then you can follow, NO!, and most importantly, poop. 3 weeks ago I bought a frisbee just wanting to test her knowledge and athletic skills out since she can jump like a kangaroo on the bowflex workout and P90x combined even as a bulldog, and low and behold, to my amazement, caught the first 3 tosses...even with hip dysplasia.
To not drag on about our dog like a person that owns 17 cats or Kris Kardashian, I'll halt this rambling. Happy Birthday to Sookie the first Olde English "Wonder" Bulldogge, continue to defy your breeds norms, and protect this new baby on the way as you've protected your human mommy!
